Fuck Net Neutrality
Dear MPs,
I am writing to express my deep opposition to the recent comments by the
Culture minister Ed Vaizey in regards to Net Neutrality and that there
is a definite flaw in the logic, education and understanding on this
matter. I refer to a recent article from the BBC for reference

I appreciate the complexities of the TCP/IP protocol, networking and the
underlying premises of the Internet might be out of reach for the
average MP, as well they should be, but I am concerned by who is
advising Mr Vaizey on his decision as a brief perusal of his education
and history show no relevant experience on this matter, nor does it go
into any detail on how he came to his decision.
It also concerns me as many bodies of news and education to the public,
such as the BBC, seem to misunderstand Net Neutrality and what it
actually means at the global infrastructure level of the Internet, who
it really benefits and why.
I would very much recommend and like to see some independent research on
this matter before a decision is rushed through parliament (see the
sorry excuse for government of the Digital Economy Bill as yet another
case of a complex subject going through no scrutiny) as I firmly believe
that it will show that one of the things Net Neutrality will allow is
for Internet Service Providers to continue to overcharge for their
overpopulated services without upgraded the important infrastructure
elements and cope with the added demand by simply prioritising bandwidth
to the highest bidder; All this stance does is give ISPs a warrant to
make UK internet access even worse to increase their profits without
having to increase their service quality. It means they'll be able to
get money for nothing, charging content providers for something the
ISPs' user has already paid for - content transit costs on their
networks.
Precisely because ISPs have been allowed to throttle and shape traffic
all they want is the reason that they haven't been investing in better
infrastructure. It just means each time the network has got busier, the
restrictions have got worse, but profits have gone up- more users,
forced to share the same services, due to increase throttling.
Im sure the ISP's sold this to Mr Vaizey in a nice abstracted fashion
that somehow made it look like they were acting in the best interest of
their customers. But surely even a technical novice can see that the
only alternative to "best effort across the board" is "slow down
everything we aren't getting paid twice to transport" and adds another
layer of excuses between poor performance for the end user and lack of
investment in network infrastructure?
