I'm finally making the leap to .NET 3.5 and becoming an Official Visual Studio 2008 developer. Not to bore you with technicalities but the new LINQ functionality will take our online API development to the next level (allowing SQL statement filtering in XML feeds amongst other things) so as I had a bit of a window this week, I've finally upgraded.
If you've ever installed Visual Studio, you'll know what I'm talking about when I mention the Politically Correct Stock Photography of development teams the world over. VS2005 featured an Asian student type, your Indian Development Team Leader, your Out Of Work Western Coder and a Woman. All very "safe". All very "real world" (apart from maybe the woman). This year Microsoft hates minorities and loves cliches...
The first guy on the install seems like the typical demographic Microsoft is aiming at with Vista. He's Rugged. He's Edgy. He's comfortable with his sexuality (enough to wear a hideously "trendy" sweater and his mates to not take the piss out of him). He's also been using computers for the last 3 months and now thinks he's an Expert.
To you and me, we know him as a Smug Cunt.
Next up we have The Nerd. He obviously works somewhere Important requiring keycards to open the doors. He hates you stealing the bandwidth of the internet with your Torrent Filth.
He's obviously a stock model... real programmers wear comedy t shirts, care not for their appearance and are afraid of the light, just like Mogwai.

Who the fuck is this and what the fuck does she have to do with programming?!? Are middle age women now bored with telephony and now training to become Software Engineers? Is my job actually that easy???
Could they not have found a better model too, I mean I know programmers are desperate but even I would gnaw my arm off than risk waking it.
One thing I have noticed over the years is that Microsoft think that black people don't program computers. I've never seen a black person in a Visual Studio installer... shame on you Microsoft!
I also noticed the VS2008 installer seemed very keen on reminding me how brilliant Vista is, but unfortunately these were the only three photographs they chose to include. I felt they'd missed out on what they were really trying to say, so in the interest of political correctness, I've created the following which they can use if they like.
Look at that Microsoft, a Black Man in a Wheel Chair on a laptop! Talk about two birds in one stone.. that was found by typing Black Man Wheel Chair into Google... you might want to try in for the next release!
Again, look at that for two birds in one stone... Chinese Person and Down Syndrome. Belittling people into buying Vista by making them feel less intelligent than someone with Down Syndrome would be a New All Time Low for Team Microsoft, but one I'm sure they're willing to explore should it allow them to meet profit targets....
And finally... the ultimate goal for Microsoft!
CEOs of Software Houses the world over would be snorting the most coke off hookers tits if this became an Installer Photo for Visual Studio...
